Officials again cut speed on Va. 151
The Virginia Department of Transportation lowered the speed limit last month along nearly two miles of Virginia 151 near Nellysford from 55 miles per hour to 45 mph.
Nelson High students headed to state drama competition
Nelson County High School Advanced Drama students placed second in the Virginia High School League One Act Regional Play Competition on Nov. 15 for their rendition of the play “Of Widows and Vegetables.”

Rate of Albemarle home permits a ‘crawl’
The pace of homebuilding in Albemarle has slowed to a crawl. In the third quarter of 2008, the county issued the fewest building permits for residential units in four years.
School budget to be ‘tough,’ depends on state, county
The Nelson County School Board will hold a preliminary hearing at 6 p.m. Nov. 13 on the 2009-2010 operational budget, at the Nelson Middle School Library.
Man guilty, other cases to be heard
A Lovingston man was found guilty on Nov. 5 in the Nelson County General District Court of possession of less than a half-ounce of marijuana with intent to distribute, a case that stemmed from an August arrest in which Nelson County sheriff’s deputies found more than a pound of suspected methamphetamine at his residence.
Majority of Nelson voters support Obama
Nearly 76 percent of the 10,722 registered voters in Nelson County cast ballots in the Nov. 4 presidential election.

UVa study testing drug that may help curb binge drinking
Researchers at the University of Virginia are beginning to test a medication they say may treat college-age adults who are genetically predisposed to binge drinking.

Nelson FFA team sixth in national event
The Nelson County High School National FFA Organization team placed sixth out of 35 states in the agronomy career development event at the 81st national FFA convention.
Nelson Chamber Christmas parade set for Dec. 7
The annual Nelson County Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade will be at 3 p.m. Dec. 7, beginning at the southern end of the village of Lovingston, traveling on Front Street and ending at the Packing Shed, where Santa will receive visitors.
Moved by deaths and injuries on Va. 151, Nelson responds
A year ago, two vehicle accidents killed four people on Va. 151 in Nelson County, making it the deadliest year for motorists on the road in a decade. Alarming as the deaths were, the accidents galvanized the community to begin to make changes on the 18-mile scenic byway that runs from Va. 833 near Brent’s Gap to Va. 250 near Avon, to make it safer.
Obama, Perriello win in Nelson High voting
If the students, faculty and staff from Nelson County High School ran the United States of America, Barack Obama would be the next president. In a mock election held at the high school Oct. 23 by Social Studies teacher Jeannette Kinde, Obama beat out John McCain by 212 votes.
Seniors get personal link with emergency dialers
Just a few weeks ago, Pete Bishop, 74, was injured when he fell at his home in Afton. After the fall, the Bishops decided to invest $60 in a personal emergency dialer for their home. Vera Bishop, works outside of the home in Waynesboro, and said the price of the dialer was worth it.
Afton rezoning hearing planned
The Nelson County Board of Supervisors will schedule another public hearing for an application to rezone a little more than one acre of land in Afton for the brother of one of the board’s members.

Supervisors to seek land for trash site
The Nelson County Board of Supervisors decided Oct. 14 to make an offer to buy a parcel of land in the Faber area for a manned solid waste collection site and put their consideration of another parcel of land in the Schuyler area on hold.
Board puts off rezoning decision
The Nelson County Board of Supervisors on Oct. 14 deferred their decision on a member of their board’s application to rezone property in Afton from residential to business until they could consult with the county attorney.
Shaken by death

Work continues on courthouse facility
The Nelson County Board of Supervisors abandoned several streets and alleys not in the state highway system that surround the courthouse square at their Sept. 25 meeting.
