The Nelson County Board of Supervisors will schedule another public hearing for an application to rezone a little more than one acre of land in Afton for the brother of one of the board’s members.

Curtis Bruguiere, brother of West District Supervisor Tommy Bruguiere, applied to rezone 1.1 acres of along Avon Road in Afton from residential to business to permit use of a small area of the existing country store as a real estate office.

This is the third time Bruguiere has requested rezoning this parcel of land. The Nelson County Planning Commission recommended denial of the request at its Sept. 23 meeting.

At the supervisor’s Oct. 14 meeting, Bruguiere agreed to not to plan to use the parcel for gasoline filling stations before the public hearing.

“I guess I have to do what is necessary in this case,” Curtis Bruguiere said.

At the supervisor’s Oct. 23 meeting, Bruguiere made that offer in writing.

Commonwealth Attorney Phil Payne said that according to the county’s ordinance, since the application was modified, it now has to have another public hearing.

Another application to rezone land in Afton was withdrawn at the Oct. 23 meeting, this one by another supervisor.

North District Supervisor Tommy Harvey and business partner Jim Gates withdrew the application to rezone 2.7 acres of land from residential to business along Tanbark Drive in Afton.

Harvey, in a telephone interview, said they have obtained legal counsel and will return later with a complete application.

The Nelson County Board of Supervisors will meet again at 2 p.m. Nov. 18.
