All changes effective May 1

Glass:  Due to market conditions, Nelson will no longer collect glass for recycling.  Please put all glass containers into the garbage.  When sent to a landfill, glass is compacted and crushed.  The resulting pieces fill air gaps, and, in some cases can actually improve the operation of the landfill.  Glass is inert, and it is not a source of air or water pollution.

Plastic Containers:  Nelson will now collect plastic containers numbers 1 through 7 for recycling.  In the past, only numbers 1 and 2 could be recycled.  Now, items such as the plastic tubs used for fresh produce and margarine will be accepted.  Remove and discard lids and caps.

Cardboard: Corrugated cardboard (with a middle layer of zig-zag spaces) will be collected in dedicated containers.  Styrofoam and other plastic packaging inserts should be discarded in the trash.

Paper:  All paper items can be recycled together in the same bin - newspaper, cereal boxes, phone books, paperback books (no hardbacks), junk mail, paper feed bags, etc.

Metal Food Cans:  Aluminum, tin, steel, or bi-metal cans that once held food can be recycled.  Cans must be empty and lightly rinsed.  No non-food cans will be accepted.

Plastic Bags:  Plastic bags may NOT be put into any County recycle bins.  The only place in Nelson that accepts plastic bags for recycling is Food Lion.
