The Nelson County Board of Supervisors passed the county’s 2008-2009 fiscal year budget at their May 22 meeting.
Supervisors approved $31.69 million in expenditures for 2008-2009, which includes $1.24 million for the county sheriff’s department, $11.24 million in local contribution to the schools and almost $350,000 for the purchase of new school buses.
“This is a document that is to guide us in terms of spending,” East District Supervisor Allen Hale said.
Hale said he would like to see all departments in the county spend less than budgeted and save money.
The county spent $29.65 million in fiscal year 2007-2008.
The tax rate for the next fiscal year will be $.55 for every $100 of assessed land value, which is intended to bring in more than $15 million in real estate taxes.
This is almost a $4 million increase from the $11 million in revenue real estate taxes brought in last fiscal year.
The new budget will go into effect on July 1.
