The National Weather Service said Wednesday that a tornado touched down in Nelson County on May 8.

The storm touched down for 20 seconds around 10:40 p.m., was on the ground for roughly a quarter mile and reached a max wind speed of 75 mph, the NWS said in a report.

The NWS said the storm had a path that was about 50 yards wide and significantly damaged roofs on two Dowdy Lane homes.

No injuries were reported.

NWS meteorologist Brian LaSorsa said Thursday that storms are rated in wind intensity from zero to five and that the Shipman tornado rated a zero.

Hundreds of homes were also damaged by a tornado in the Suffolk area on May 8. News reports said hundred were injured, but no deaths were reported. That storm was rated a three.
