Marion Webb Gooding
Marion Webb Gooding, 77 of Arrington, departed this life on Aug. 13, 2008 at the Lovingston Health Care Center. Born in Nelson County, Nov. 21, 1930, she was a daughter of the late John Ashley and Annie Carter Webb. She was a member of New Mount Baptist Church where she served faithfully until failing health.
She leaves to cherish her memory one son, Michael Gooding and one grandson, Jeffery, of Raleigh, N.C., one brother, Franklin Webb of Arrington, three sisters-in-law, Annie Gooding of New York, Doris Webb of Richmond and Mabel Webb of Washington, D.C., three brothers-in-law, George Gooding of New York, Churchill Gooding of Charlottesville, and Ed Washington of Seattle; and a host of cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.
A funeral service was conducted Aug. 18 at New Mount Baptist Church with the Rev. Allen Panell officiating. Burial was at Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Byrum-Parr Funeral Home served the family.
Joel Darin Day
The extended Day family mourns the sudden loss of Joel Darin Day, 43, of Afton.
He is remembered for his sensitivity to family and friends. His life was made more joyful by bird watching with his grandparents, motocross racing since his early teens, reading, three pugs, and mountain biking on rustic trails.
Self-employed, Joel shared his many talents by doing construction, landscaping and renovations for countless others.
In addition to his life companion, Becky Birnbaum of Afton, Joel is survived by his maternal grandmother, Mozelle Henkel of Las Vegas; his mother, Sylvia Straughan, and her husband, Virgil, of Ivy; his father Bill Day and his wife, Shirley, of Waynesboro; Becky’s mother, Kathy Birnbaum of Herndon; his sister, Denise Day Crosson of Las Vegas; a step-sister, Kimberly Smiley, and her two children, Zachary and Jonathan, of Midlothian; and a step-grandmother, Millie Hill, of Waynesboro. Special friends in Joel’s heart were Ronnie and Mary Shelton of Waynesboro. Dear to Joel were three pugs — Otis, who recently passed away, and Zoe and Tora.
Joel was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, John Henkel; and his paternal grandparents, Virginia and Bill Day, all of Waynesboro; and Becky’s father, Bruce Birnbaum of Herndon.
A private family memorial service was led by the Rev. David Washburn at the farm Becky and Joel enjoyed. At his request, his remains will be scattered on the farm, at a Fredericksburg motocross track and at the Grand Canyon.
Memorial gifts may be made in Joel’s name to the Rockbridge Area Free Clinic or the Audubon Society.
McCutcheon’s Funeral Home provided assistance to Joel’s family.
Clinton Burnett Harris
Clinton Burnett Harris, 70, of Lovingston died Aug. 3. Arrangements by Wells/ Sheffield Funeral Chapel of Lovingston.
Fred Thomas Painter
Fred Thomas Painter, 68, of Piney River died Aug. 12, 2008 at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville. Born in Nelson County Aug. 24, 1939, he was the son of the late Wallace and Eddie Elizabeth Lawhorn Painter. Fred enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved his six dogs. He had been employed in road paving for Blakemore Construction. In addition to his parents, his wife, Edith Wood Painter, preceded him.
He is survived by two brothers, Eugene (Gene) Painter and his wife, Shirley of Orange, and John Douglas (Doug) Painter and his wife, Elizabeth Ann of Roseland; one sister, Shirley Painter Deaton of Amherst; numerous nieces, nephews and other loving relatives and friends.
A funeral service was conducted Aug. 14 at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home by Dr. Reed Ness and the Rev. Carroll Martin with burial in Jonesboro Cemetery.
Hermine K. Powell
Hermine K. Powell, 75, of Shipman, died July 31. Arrangements by Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel of Lovingston.
Dolly Newell McGann Thompson
Dolly Newell McGann Thompson, 98, of Waynesboro, passed away Aug. 15, 2008 at Shenandoah Nursing Home. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was born Aug. 11, 1910, in Nelson County. She was the daughter of the late James Milton and Emma Loving Campbell McGann.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her greatest love and friend, her husband of 65 years, A. Philip Thompson, on Jan. 4, 1996. She was also preceded by two sisters: Mary McGann Hughes and Ivy McGann Hughes; and two brothers, Willard McGann and Donald McGann.
She is survived by two sisters-in-law: Thelma McGann and Irene Thompson. Also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews, as well as a devoted and loving friend, Virginia Bunch; her neighbor and friend of 45 years, Chris Shull, and her “adopted son,” Dr. Ben Bohren of San Francisco.
She was a homemaker. She was also a member of West Waynesboro Church of Christ and a former member of Wintergreen Christian Church in Wintergreen, Virginia.
A funeral service was held Aug. 18 at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes by Philip Forehand. Burial was at Augusta Memorial Park.

William Covell Wood
William C. Wood, 81, of Charlottesville, passed away at his residence on Aug. 6, 2008.
He was born Nov. 9, 1926, in Schuyler. Mr. Wood was preceded in death by his parents, Vanzy L. Wood Sr. and Grace Crickenberger Wood; and a brother, Vanzy L. Wood Jr.
Mr. Wood retired from Monticello Dairy as a sales supervisor after many years of service. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary M. Wood; a daughter, Cathy Dean, and a son, Michael Wood of Charlottesville. Also surviving are two sisters, Alice W. Black of Palmyra, and Polly W. Miller of Crozet; a sister-in-law, Virginia F. Wood; three grandchildren, Marlee Wood and Dylan Wood, both of Charlottesville, and Jason Dean and his wife, Heather, and a great-granddaughter, Sarah, all of Tennessee; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held Aug. 9 at the chapel of Hill and Wood Funeral Home with Pastor Greg Payne officiating. Interment was at Monticello Memory Gardens.
The family gives special thanks to Hospice of the Piedmont, Laura Preganz and Dr. Thomas Harris of University of Virginia Medical Center.
