Carrie Edna Bruce, 98, died on Feb. 9. Her husbands, Albert Anseth and Charles Bruce, preceded her in death.
She was born Feb. 14, 1909, on her family farm in Pierre, S.D., daughter of the late William and Caroline Ward Schumacher.
She moved to Topeka, Kan., with her first husband, where she worked as a secretary. Upon his death, she moved to Colorado where she worked for Rockwool Industries until she retired. She married her second husband, Charles, in 1970, and adopted his daughter, Ruth.
She was a Sunday school teacher and active in Eastern Star and other veteran auxiliaries with her husband, Charles. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Colorado Springs. She moved to Charlottesville, in 2001, to be closer to her daughter.
She is survived by her daughter, Ruth Lawrence and her husband, Steven, of Barboursville; one grandson, Stephen Whitworth of Damascus, Md.; two step-grandsons, Matt Lawrence and his wife, Meredith, of Charlottesville and Kevin Lawrence and his wife, Nicole, of Schuyler; and three step-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
Burial was at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado. No service is planned.

Gordon Marshall Butler II, of Scottsville, died on Feb. 16.
He was born Aug. 29, 1967, in Charlottesville, to Brenda Thacker Stephens and the late Gordon M. Butler Sr.
He is survived by his mother, Brenda Thacker Stephens and her husband, Gilbert; a son, Joshua Harris of Charlottesville; daughters, Kayla Harris of Stanardsville and Jessica Butler of Nelson County; a brother, Guy Lloyd of Ohio; a sister, Stacey Cooper of Louisa and her fiancé, Dominic Morris; numerous aunts, uncles, other family members and friends.
He was a member of Living Stones Church and a cab driver for Skyline Cab Company.
A graveside service was held on Feb. 20 at the Bolton Family Cemetery.

Judith Elaine Hughes Cash, 58, of Afton, died Feb. 14.
She was preceded in death by her father, Lewis Mundy Hughes and sister, Carolyn Michael.
She is survived by her husband, Allen Cash; a son, Thomas Hughes and his wife, Theresa, of Faber and their children, Felicia, Cody and Crystal. In addition, she is survived by her mother, Virginia Fitzgerald and stepfather, Lennie Fitzgerald; sisters, Kathryn Hatter, Lynn Goodloe and Della Sartin; brothers, Burton Goodloe, John Fitzgerald and Robert Fitzgerald.
Family and friends gathered on Feb. 16 at the home of Kathryn Hatter for remembrance and celebration of her life.

Frank Leslie Cash, Jr., 81, died Feb. 11. He was the husband for 52 years of Merle Maxwell Cash.
Born April 8, 1926 in Norton, he was the son of the late Frank Leslie and Celia Shrewsbury Cash. He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Charlottesville, a graduate of Virginia Tech, a retired electrical engineer from Bell Atlantic and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He is also survived by three daughters, Elaine Cash Nolen and husband, Dennis, of Glen Burnie, Md., Janet Cash Green and husband, Russell, of Newark, Del., and Mary Jean Cash Wichmann and husband, Mark, of Wilmington, Del.; a sister, Mildred Shrewsbury Cash of Charlottesville; six grandchildren, David and Elizabeth Nolen, Jesse and Spencer Green, and Mia and Celia Wichmann.
Funeral services were conducted on Feb. 15 at Driskill Funeral Chapel in Amherst. Burial followed in the Amherst Cemetery.

Elizabeth Francis Jane "Betty" Cook, 89, died on Feb. 12.
She was born on March 3, 1919 in Brainard, Minn. to Frederick Charles Cook and Emma Louise Siedlitz Cook. She was married to the late James F. Ferguson for 53 years.
She and her husband retired to Virginia in 1973 from Woodland Hills, Calif. The made their homes at Smith Mountain Lake, Amherst and Lynchburg.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Ferguson Eggleston and her husband Beverly C. of Lynchburg; her son, Richard George Ferguson and his wife Audrey L. of Santa Clarita, Calif.; her sister, Marilyn Kemper of Minnesota; her brother, Jack Nelson and his wife Anita of Idaho; six grandchildren, Kacey Eggleston (Stephanie) of Amherst, Tim Eggleston (Becky) of Yorktown, Wendy Sale (Ed) of Amherst, Jeffrey Ferguson of Raleigh, N.C., Candy Lovegren (Tony) of Reseda, Calif. and Eugene Ferguson of Santa Clarita, Calif; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ann Boyd and Margaret Lies, and two brothers, Fred and Bob Cook, all of Minnesota.
She was a life-long Methodist and in her later years she attended Midway Baptist Church of Amherst. Since residing in Lynchburg, she attended Grace Church of God in Forest.
A funeral service was conducted Feb. 15 at Whitten Monelison Chapel. Interment followed at Briarwood Memorial Gardens in Amherst.

William Lee Drumheller, 65, known to family and friends as Billy, died on Feb. 16.
He was born in Charlottesville, the son of Frederick and Margaret Drumheller, both now deceased.
He graduated from Nelson County High School and was employed by the The Daily Progress in Charlottesville for 42 years. His employment was interrupted by three years of active military duty in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, following which he also served three years of inactive duty.
In addition to his wife Julie Smith Drumheller, he is survived by his sister, Charlotte and her husband, Warren Morris of Shipman; two brothers, Douglas and his wife, Sue, of Abilene, Texas, and Larry and his friend, Shirley Spitzer of Somerset; and a host of in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, co-workers and friends.
Graveside services were held at Holly Memorial Gardens on Feb. 19.

Harry Wilson Fitzgerald, of Lovingston, 74, died Feb. 16.
Born in Nelson County on May 12, 1933, he was a son of the late Harry and Cassanor Lawhorne Fitzgerald.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Fitzgerald of Dumfries; three sons, Steve Fitzgerald of North Carolina, Jerry Lawhorne of Tyro, and Chad Fitzgerald of Florida; two daughters, Melissa and Darlene Fitzgerald, both of Prince William County; several grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Fitzgerald and a son, Dale Fitzgerald.
Funeral service were conducted Feb. 20 at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home with burial in Jonesboro Cemetery.

Nancy Neal Frank, 61, of Fishersville, died on Feb. 14.
Born April 14, 1946, in Harrisonburg, she was a daughter of the late Charles William and Anne (Rolston) Frank.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Harrisonburg for most of her life.
She is survived by one brother, Charles Frank and his wife, Betsy, of Clifton; two sisters, Joanne Lee and her husband, Kenneth, of Afton, and Nell Valentine and her husband Robert, of Lexington, Ken.; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held on Feb. 17 at Rodes United Methodist Church in Afton. Interment of the cremains will take place at a later date in Cooks Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Harry A. Franklin, 60, of Charlottesville died Feb. 8.
Born April 13, 1947, he was the son of the late Johnny W. and Martha Willoughby Franklin.
He is survived by two brothers, John H. Franklin and Bernard Franklin; and one sister, Connie Cash.
A graveside service was conducted Feb. 12 at Jonesboro Cemetery in Roseland.

Joyce H. Hall, 69, of Charlottesville, died Feb. 12.
Born in Charlottesville on March 30, 1938, she was the daughter of Edith Herring and the late Willie B. Herring. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Charlotte Ann Herring.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 51 years, Charles E. Hall Jr.; her four children, Neanne Fitz and her husband, Terry, Dianne Vickers and her husband, Chad, Hollis Hall and his wife, Cathe, Debra Bush and her husband, Steve; 11 grandchildren, Hillory Fitz and his wife, Theresa, Ryan Fitz and his wife, Nancy, Paul Fitz and his wife, Priscilla, Phillip Fitz and his wife, Chelsea, Michelle Feild and her husband, George, Kim Herring and her husband, James, Josh Garrison, Angie Powell and her husband, Chris, Robbie Hall and his wife, Amy, Ricky Hall and his wife, Cara, Amanda Easton and her husband, Sam; 16 great-grandchildren; her brothers, Ollie B. Herring and his wife, Barbara, Ronnie Herring and his wife, June, Tommy Herring; a sister, Phyllis Caldwell; her mother-in-law, Leona Pearl Hall; her sister-in-law Hazel Gibson and her husband, Ralph.
She was employed for over 30 years with University of Virginia Blue Ridge Hospital and Transportation and was an avid camper.
A funeral service was conducted on Feb. 15 at the Teague Funeral Home chapel. Interment followed at Holly Memorial Gardens.

Gladys Herring, 72, of Earlysville, died on Feb. 13.
She was born on June 14, 1935, in Albemarle County, to the late William and Gladys Marsh.
She is survived by her six children, William Earl Herring Jr. of Earlysville, Donald Allen Herring of Earlysville, Keith Randall Herring and his wife, Lisa, of Ruckersville, Kevin Scott Herring and his wife, Melissa, of Madison, Elizabeth Ann Herring of Dyke and Susan Lawhorne and her husband, Greg, of Schuyler.
Additional survivors include her sister, Eva Mae Collier of Charlottesville; two brothers, Herman Lowry and Robert Lowry, both of Charlottesville; 10 grandchildren, Linwood Via Jr. and his wife, Melissa, Randall C. Via, Jason Via, Kayla Lawhorne, Justin Lawhorne, Taylor Herring, Kateland Herring, Hannah Herring, Haley Herring, and Madison Herring; and one great grandson.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, William Earl Herring Sr.; and two brothers, Raleigh Lowry and James Lowry.
A funeral service was held on Feb. 16 at Ryan Funeral Home in Quinque. Interment followed at Chestnut Grove Cemetery.

George L. Kesler, 73, of Bent Mountain, died on Feb. 10.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran from 1953 till 1957, serving at Guantanamo Bay.
He is survived by a brother, Gene Kesler; sister, Nita Conner, both of Roanoke; sons, Mark K. Kesler and wife, Emily, of Arrington and Dennis M. Kesler, of Roanoke; grandchildren, Taylor Kesler and Kaitlin Cash, both of Arrington, Erin Thurston, of Roanoke, LCPL. Christopher P. Davis, USMC, of Okinawa, Japan; many friends and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services and interment were private.

Ronald Walter Roberts, 72, of Barboursville, died Feb. 17.
He was born April 9, 1935, in Nelson County, to George Allen Roberts and Maisie Graves Roberts.
He was retired from the University of Virginia Athletics Department, a Veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps from 1952 until 1955, a former member of the Nelson County Board of Supervisors, a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church and was trained in Forest Fire Prevention and Control.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Longley Roberts; two brothers, Michael Dane Roberts and infant, Kenneth Carl Roberts; a sister, infant, Barbara Joyce Roberts; and a nephew, Jeffrey Scott Roberts.
He is survived by a daughter, Donna D. Thacker and her husband Philip of Ruckersville; three grandchildren, Christopher B. Morris of Charlottesville, Jason M. Thacker of Charlottesville and P. Matthew Thacker of Chesapeake; one great-grandchild; two brothers, Richard A. Roberts and his wife, Doris, of Afton and Lewis C. Roberts and his wife, Pat, of Scottsville; two nephews; a niece; friends and numerous cousins.
A funeral service was held Feb. 20 at Teague Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed at Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery in Afton.

Richard Staron, 55, of Afton, and formerly of Greenport, N.Y. died on Feb. 9.
He is survived by his wife, Ginger; and his brothers, Robert and Donald Staron and their wives. He is also survived by his in-laws, James and Muriel Wein and Richard and Penny Winters; as well as his sister in-laws, Beth Spiess, Amy Blain and Susan Winters and their husbands.
He taught Special Education and Driver Education at Western Albemarle High School. He was a life long avid and skilled golfer.
A memorial service was held on Feb. 19 at the Rockfish Presbyterian Church in Nellysford.

John Clayton Thompson, 57, of Monroe, died Feb. 8.
Born Feb. 18, 1950 in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late Nelson Thompson and Maxie Thompson. He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church in Monroe, and a Quality Control Manager with Lynchburg Sheltered Industries for 32 years. He was also a member of the Elon Ruritan Club with over 30 years of service.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Elodie Taylor Thompson; a daughter, Meredith Suzanne Thompson, of Monroe; a son, John Clayton Thompson Jr. and wife, Catherine Elizabeth Thompson, of Monroe; two grandchildren, Brady Taylor Thompson and Madeline Elizabeth Thompson; five brothers, Percy R. Thompson, Russell L. Thompson, Malcolm Thompson, Layman Michael Thompson and Joe Thompson; three sisters, Mable Krantz, Mary Thompson and Mildred Thompson; and many close friends, nieces, nephews and other family members.
A memorial service was held on Feb. 10 at Bethany United Methodist Church in Monroe.

Annette Maria Walker, 40, of 603 Victoria Avenue, Lynchburg, died on Feb. 10.
She was the daughter of Lorenzo Walker Sr. and Grace Cashwell Walker. She had been employed at Kirkley Hotel in Lynchburg.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by two brothers, Lorenzo L. Walker Jr. of Woodbridge and Lloyd L. Walker of Lynchburg; grandmothers, Mary Walker Lecator and Nettie K. Cashwell, both of Lynchburg; two nieces; nine aunts; five uncles; and a host of cousins and other relatives.
A funeral service was conducted on Feb. 15 at St. James Baptist Church. Burial was in the Cashwell family cemetery.
