Phyllis Barnett Almond, 68, died on Jan. 25.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank.
She is survived by her stepfather, Robert L. Tyree; her daughter, Denise Hardy and her husband, Bruce; her son, David Goolsby; six grandchildren, Yvonne Batkins, Matt and Thomas Creed, Ashley, Abigail, Autumn, and Ava Goolsby; two stepgrandchildren, Lindsay and Justin Hardy; six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Dolores Truett and Donna Mannoff.
The funeral service took place on Feb. 2 at Rocksprings United Methodist Church in Faber. Burial was in the church cemetery.
George M. Penn MD, 77, of Nellysford, formerly of Topeka, Kan., died on Jan. 18.
He was born April 14, 1930, in Orange County, N.J., to Marion and Francois Penn. He lived there until the age of 12 when his parents passed away. He finished school in Hillsborough, Texas where he was raised by his aunt and uncle, Nina and Richard Ince and their son, Dick.
He attended one year at Purdue University. He finished his undergraduate studies in Austin, Texas. He then attended medical school in Galveston, Texas, where he graduated in 1958.
He practiced general medicine in Fabiens, Texas. He then returned to Austin to complete a residency in psychiatry.
He married Mary Ann Cochran in 1956. and they had four chidren together, Mark, Cindi, Russell and David. They were divorced in 1981. Mary Ann preceded him in death on June 29, 2004.
He practiced psychiatry for four years in Lubbock, Texas. He brought the family to Topeka, Kan. in 1967, and joined the Menninger Foundation as a staff psychiatrist. He was the first Chairman of the Kansas Impaired Physician Program and he helped establish the Alcohol and Drug Addiction program at the Menninger Foundation.
He left the Menninger Foundation in 1980, and began work at the Colmery O'Neil Veterans Administration as a Building Chief Psychiatrist until his retirement in September of 1995. In addition he worked part-time as a psychiatrist for the Kansas Department of Corrections for many years.
George is survived by his companion of 14 years, Elaine Wilcox; children, Mark Penn and wife Kimberly, Cindi Buck and her husband, Mark, Russell Penn and his wife, Kelly, and David Penn; a daughter-in-law, Joanna Penn; his grandchildren, Rachel, Elliot, Natalie, Olivia, Alex and Brian; his sisters, Mary Key and her husband, Jesse and Sue Barnes; a cousin, Dick Ince.
A brother, Jack Penn, preceded him in death.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on March 16, at the Wintergreen Mountain Inn Conference area.
Amy Saulter died on Jan. 27.
She is survived by her parents, Connie Saulter and Carey Burch of Virginia Beach; her father, Thomas Noonan and brothers, Zachary and Calin Noonan of Naples, Fla.; her grandmother, Ida Arlene Saulter of Coudersport, Penn.; and uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends (both two- and four-legged) too numerous to mention.
She was an avid rider and a member of the Oak Ridge Fox Hunt Club. She supported her horse habit working as counter manager for Origin Products, Belks Department Store, Dover Saddlery and assisted with OWLs programs in Charlottesville.
Friends and family will gather at the Greencroft Club in Charlottesville from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Feb. 9 to celebrate her life.
Josephine Janetta Jones Wood, 85 of Shipman died on Jan. 28.
Born May 30, 1922, in Nelson County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph P. Jones and Elnora Gowen Jones.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a her husband, Herbert C. Wood; son, Montague H. Wood; a sister, Carrie L. Lyon; and two brothers, Gordon and Ryland Jones.
She was a member of St. Stephens Baptist Church in Tye River.
She is survived by a son, William C. Wood and wife Rebecca of Arrington; a daughter Jane W. Williams and husband Walter, of Shipman; a daughter-in-law, Mary B. Wood of Arrington; four sisters, Dorothy Miller of Lynchburg, Lois Dipaola of Mechanicsville, Jessie Jones of Amherst, and Virginia Tyree of Gladstone; two grandchildren, Tommy Williams and wife Anna and Mary Pippin and husband Johnny all of Shipman, five great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
A funeral service was held on Jan. 31 at Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel in Lovingston. Interment followed in the Wood Family Cemetery at Arrington.
Joe Zulawski died on Jan. 20.
He was born in Chicago, Ill. on March 8, 1918 to Joseph Frank Zulawski and Mary Ciesielski Zulawski. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Zulawski and son, Julian Zulawski.
He lived many years in Park Ridge, Ill. before moving to Lovingston.
He is survived by three children, Dan Zulawski of Mass., Hope Boone of Ken., Sue Koll of Ga.; four step-children, Tom Allin, Bill Allin, Beth Havens of Fla., Peggy Swan of Va.; and 20 grandchildren.
He attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the 1940's and received a BA from Northeastern Illinois State College in 1968. He then recieved a masters degree from Illinois Institute of Design in 1972. He taught art to adults and youth throughout his life. He exhibited his work across the country for more than 70 years in hundreds of shows, receiving many awards. He was a lifetime member of the Chicago Society of Artists.
He was a member of Third Unitarian Church in Chicago. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
