Elsie Lee Bridgwater
Elsie Lee Bridgwater, 86, of Lovingston, died on March 18.
Born Aug. 17, 1921 in Lynchburg, a daughter of the late Wesley F. Thurston and Emma Burton Thurston.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, William L. Bridgwater Jr. in 2001 and a sister Dorothy Coffey.
She is survived by two brothers, Carlton Thurston of Altus, Okla. and William David Thurston of Keene; three sisters, Mary Harris of Faber, Peggy Thurston of Lovingston and Phyllis Eason of Winter Park, Fla. and a niece.
A graveside service was held on March 20 at the Oak Hill Church Cemetery in Lovingston.
Dorothy Murray Floyd
Dorothy Murray Floyd, 80, died on March 22. She was the wife of the late John Franklin Floyd.
Born Oct. 26, 1927, in Blue Ridge, she was a daughter of the late Frank E. Murray and the late Roberta Bruce Murray Freeburg. She was a member of Randolph Memorial Baptist Church.
She is survived by three sons, Donald Ray Floyd of Chesapeake, John Douglas Floyd and Coleman Franklin Floyd and wife Pamela, both of Norfolk; a daughter, Linda Floyd Rowland and husband Reid of Madison Heights; three sisters, Frances E. Moses of Vinton, Thelma M. Gallup and husband Dan of Virginia Beach, and Janie M. Krahl and husband Richard of Milan, Ill.; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted on March 25 at Driskill Funeral Chapel.
Vivian Mae
Robey Gaddy
Vivian Mae Robey Gaddy, 76, of Lynchburg, died on March 22. She was the widow of James Earl Gaddy Sr.
Born Sept. 5, 1931 in Lynchburg, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence H and Lola F. Carter Gaddy. She was homemaker and a member of Whites Memorial United Methodist Church.
She is survived by two sons, James Earl Gaddy Jr. and his wife Nita of Lynchburg and David Lee Gaddy of Forest; one daughter Betty Jean Gaddy of Lynchburg; one brother, Ronnie Robey and his wife Judy of Bedford; one sister, Linda Hillsman of Elon; two grandchildren, Lynn Evans and Chrystal Gaddy of Richmond; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Gaddy and one sister, Faye Dawson.
Graveside services were held on March 25 in Fort Hill Memorial Park.
Clara E. Harris-Frazier
Clara E. Harris-Frazier died on March 15.
She was born Nov. 30, 1924, to the late Joshua and Sarah Harris in Faber. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Frazier. She was a member of Mount Airy Baptist Church in Faber.
She was under watch care at Mt. Zion First African Baptist Church in Charlottesville. She was employed by National Linen Service until her retirement.
She is survived by three daughters, Clara S. Frazier, Rosann Frazier-Edwards and her husband, Lyvonne Edwards, and Betty L. Frazier; one son, John F. Frazier; six grandchildren, Ronica Turner and her husband, Jesse Turner Jr., Markietta Frazier, Nicole Frazier, Franklin Lindsay, Shaina Frazier and Robyn Frazier-Bodrick; six great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on March 22 at Mt. Airy Baptist Church, 939 Rockcreek Road, Faber.
William Richey Jobe Jr.
William Richey Jobe Jr., 95, died on March 18.
He was a retired employee of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad with over 40 years of service. He was a long time member of Amherst Baptist Church, serving as a deacon and member of the adult choir. He was a member of Clinton Lodge #73 AF & AM in Amherst for over 60 years.
Born Feb. 27, 1913, in Gladstone, he was the son of the late William Richey and Minnie Akers Jobe. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Nellie Turnes Jobe; his wife, Catherine Williams Jobe; his brother, Horace D. Jobe; and his son, William H. Jobe.
He is survived by his son, Kenneth Jobe of Forest; his sister, Ruth Jobe Givens of Newport News; grandchildren, Chase Jobe of Charleston, Ill., Kyle Jobe of Glen Carbon, Ill., Elizabeth Jobe of Amherst, Doug Jobe of Amherst, and Chris Jobe of Richmond; and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were conducted on March 21 in the Amherst Cemetery.
Dover Gene Mawyer
Dover Gene Mawyer, 79, of Charlottesville died on March 18.
Born April 16, 1928, in Nelson County, he was the son of the late Earl H. and Edmonia Mae McQuarry Mawyer.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel M. Mawyer; two sons, Gary Dale Mawyer and his wife, Karen, and Alan Stuart Mawyer; two sisters, Gladys M. Phillips and Charlotte Bradley; four brothers, Earl H. Mawyer Jr. and his wife, Janie, Raymond W. Mawyer and his wife, Peggy, Donald Mawyer and his wife, Becky, Ryland Mawyer and his wife, Lucy; four grandchildren Alexander Dale Mawyer and his wife, Kirsten, Edward G. Mawyer and his wife, Kara, Daniel Gene Mawyer, and Lara Anne Mawyer; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted on March 21 at the Teague Chapel. Interment followed at Holly Memorial Gardens.
Doris Ellinton
Cooke Nunnally
Doris “Dot” Ellinton Cooke Nunnally of Waynesboro, died on March 8.
She was born in Charlottesville on May 2, 1926. She lived in Afton, moving to Waynesboro when she was 16.
She had worked as a telephone operator, been in the secretarial pool for American Express; and retired after 35 years of service as a travel agent.
She was preceded in death by her father, Lynwood Wesley Cooke; her mother Lena Ellinton Cooke; a brother, Guy Delmore Cooke Sr.; two sisters, Mary Lee Lowe and Carrie Cooke; and her husband, Frank R. Nunnally. She was also preceded in death by a nephew, Guy Delmore Cooke Jr.
She was the last remaining member of the immediate Cooke family of Afton.
Her remains were buried at Rodes United Methodist Church in Afton. A private ceremony will be held in her honor at a later date.
John Leo Ogden
John Leo Ogden, 77, of Lovingston, died on March 21.
He was born April 12, 1930 in Lovingston, a son of the late Leo Clifford Ogden and Nolie Wright Ogden.
He was a graduate of Nelson County High School, a U.S. Air Force Veteran, an active member, Deacon and Trustee of Ridgecrest Baptist Church at Lovingston, a retired Civil Service Employee with 24 years of service as an Airplane Mechanic and an additional 12 years with the Federal Aviation Administration, and an employee until his illness with Fisher Auto Parts Company of Lovingston, Charlottesville and Nellysford.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Alice Pannell Ogden; his daughter, Sharon Lynn Young and husband Donald of Mechanicsville, Md.; five sisters, Faye O. Purvis and husband Skippy of Shipman, Anna O. Harris of Lovingston, Mildred O. Johnson and husband Dan of Silver Springs, Md., Jean O. Ayres of Richmond and Elizabeth Ogden of Arlington; and his grandchildren, Chad, Brad and Wendy; and one great-grandson.
Besides his parents. he was preceded in death by his son John Clifton Ogden.
A funeral service was held on March 25 at Ridgecrest Baptist Church. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Robert William Penn
Robert William Penn, 71, of Lynchburg, died on March 15.
Born in Nelson County on Sept. 6, 1936, he was a son of the late James and Alice Whitlock Penn. He was a self-employed concrete finisher and was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.
He is survived by one son, Roger Penn of Lynchburg; one daughter, Sheila P. Jones of Roseland; two brothers, Shelby and Thomas Penn, both of Massies Mill; one sister, Alice P. Hodgson of Maryland; two grandchildren, Derrick Penn and Keona Loving; and many other relatives and friends.
A graveside funeral service was conducted on March 22 at Oak Hill Memorial Gardens.
Ernest Micklem
Purvis Jr.
Ernest “Ernie” Micklem Purvis Jr., 76, of Roseland, died on March 21.
Born in Nelson County, April 30, 1931, he was the son of the late Ernest Micklem Purvis Sr. and Eliza Thompson Purvis.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Elizabeth Carter Purvis; his daughter, Elizabeth Patterson Purvis; two brothers-in-law, Randal Carter and wife Wylene of Savannah, Ga., and Harry F. Mann of Waynesboro; three nephews; and other friends and family.
He was a sales representative for 50 years and was presently employed by Norfolk Bearings and Supply Co. Inc. in Lexington. He served for two years in the U.S. Army First Calvary Division and was a member of Jonesboro Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Anna P. Mann, Virginia P. Fortune, and Jeannette P. Brent.
A funeral service was conducted on March 25 at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home with burial in Jonesboro Cemetery.
Ronnie Wayne Tyree
Ronnie “Booger” Wayne Tyree, 53, of Amherst, died on March 11.
Born in Lynchburg, he was a son of Bennie Carlton Tyree Jr. and the late Christine Burks Tyree. He had been a member of Bethel Baptist Church and had attended Clifford Baptist Church.
In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Karen Mawyer Tyree; mother-in-law, Fannie Mawyer of Amherst; two sons, Keith Tyree of Big Island and Brandon W. Tyree of Phenix; two step-sons, Chris Landon and Douglas A. Sprouse, both of Arrington; one daughter, Simone Phillips (Shawn) of Davis Creek; one brother, Carlton Tyree (Frances) of Amherst; two sisters, Linda D. Tyree of Gladstone and Kelly T. Seitz (Donnie) of Amherst; and one granddaughter, Elizabeth Tyree.
A graveside funeral was conducted on March 15 at Jonesboro Cemetery.
Joyce Hughes Ward
Joyce Hughes Ward, 81, of Nellysford, died on March 20.
Born in Nelson County, March 23, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Guy Carlton Hughes and Inez Small Hughes. She was a school bus driver for the Nelson County School System for over 30 years, and was a lifelong, very active member of Rockfish Valley Baptist Church.
She is survived by a son, Dale Ward (Linda) of Nellysford; three daughters, Kristy Haney (Chris) of Nellysford, Lisa Morris (Craig) of Afton, and Sherri Davis (Paul) of Troy; 13 grandchildren, Michelle, Annette, Bruce, Matthew, Travis, Christopher, Heather, Russell, Gary, Guy, Bekah, Lisa, and Jennifer; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous friends and relatives.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, David C. Ward.
Funeral services were conducted on March 24 at Rockfish Valley Baptist Church in Nellysford, with burial at the church cemetery.
