Christine Hawkins Abbott

Christine Hawkins Abbott, Dec. 21, 1909 to Aug. 30, 2008, was born in Cifax, the first-born child of Olivia Cox Hawkins and Clifton Edward Hawkins.

Christine was a long- standing member of Bethany United Methodist Church.

As a young bride, she and her husband, Saint Claire Abbott, moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They returned to their Virginia roots after Saint’s retirement from Coca-Cola. She has been a widow since the last day of March 1982, when she found her beloved husband of more than 50 years collapsed in their rose garden.

Christine is survived by her brother, Clifton F. Hawkins and his wife, Virginia, of Lynchburg, and her brother Wayne J. Leftwich of Madison Heights. Her first cousin, Joyce Williams, was like a sister to her.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Edward M. Hawkins and J. Preston Leftwich and two sisters, Arline H. Owen and Edith H. Brooks.

Never having children of her own, she kept her nieces and nephews entertained by asking the Virginia Tech fans and graduates about the UVA graduates and fans and vice versa. She was always interested in all of her nieces and nephews, Barbara H. and John R. Dieterman of Saint Simons Island, Ga.; John Hawkins of Lynchburg; Wayne and Stephanie Hawkins of Amelia; H.B. and Sandra Brooks of Lynchburg; Linda and Clarence Waskey of Nellysford; Joyce Ann Staton of Madison Heights; Donald Hill of Houston, Texas; Betty and Larry Arrington of Forest; Doug and Patty Hawkins of Lynchburg; Brenda and John Hon of South Carolina; Cindy Mann of Lynchburg; and Frances Abbott White of Madison Heights.

The Rev. Dr. Tom Thomas and the Rev. Steve Parker officiated the graveside service for Christine Hawkins Abbott on Sept. 4, at Virginia Memorial Park in Forest. The family received friends and family after the service in the Fellowship Hall of Bethany United Methodist Church.

James R. Harding

James R. Harding, 83, of Crozet died at the Laurels on Aug. 24.

He was born on Nov. 16, 1924, in Batesville, the son of the late Arthur Jones Harding and Rosa Spencer Harding. He is preceded in death by one daughter, Linda McAllister and three sisters, Ann Houchens, Verdell Beal, and Dorothy Via.

He is survived by his wife, Violet Harding, of 54 years; two daughters, Barbara Browning and Deborah Harding, both of Crozet; two sons-in-law, Melvin McAllister of Crozet and Charles Browning of Charlottesville; three grandchildren, Valerie Schwartz and her husband, Dwayne, Charles R. Browning, Amy Pritchett and her husband, Scottie; three great-grandchildren, all which brought him joy, Chelsey Browning, Savannah Prichett and Trevor Schwartz; three sisters, Margaret Nay of Faber, Agnes Fisher of Crozet, Peggy Taylor and her husband, Ray, of Crozet, and many nieces and nephews.

He retired from Acme Visible Records in l986. He was a member of the Crozet Baptist Church and their Baptist Mens Class, 8436 Douglas Hall Kirby, American Legion Post 74, and Disabled American Veterans #33.

The family suggest that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Crozet Baptist Church General Fund, 5804 St. George Ave., Crozet, VA 22932.

The family received friends Aug. 26, at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel.

A funeral service was held Aug. 27, at the Crozet Baptist Church with the Reverend David Collier, the Reverend Colleen Swingler-Titus and Melvin McAllister officiating. Interment followed at the Rockgate Cemetery in Crozet.

Anderson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth Ann Harris

Ms. Elizabeth Ann Harris, 42, Riverside Ave., Charlottesville, departed this life Aug. 28, at Martha Jefferson Hospital, Charlottesville, at 2:45 p.m.

She was born March 28, 1966, at the University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville, a daughter of the late James Everette Harris and Verdie Virginia Banks Harris, who survives.

She was a nurse at Martha Jefferson Hospital and a member of the Mt. Eagle Baptist Church in Nellysford.

Surviving relatives include one son, James Trevette Miles; four brothers, Alfred Harris and Joyce, of Waynesboro, Raymond Harris and Doris, of Lumberton, N.C., Dale Harris and his wife, Tammy, of Fayetteville, N.C., and Stanley Harris and Salina, of Kan.; two sisters, Rosa Martin of Charlottesville, and Sharon Harris of Afton; a maternal grandmother, Lovely Louise Banks of Lovingston; three uncles, Robert Banks and his wife, Dee, of Providence, R.I., the Rev. Henry Banks and his wife, Malinda, and Guy Banks and his wife, Debra, both of Waynesboro; two aunts, Teresa Banks of Nellysford, and Mamie Banks of Charlottesville; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service was held Sept. 1, at the Hebron Baptist Church, Afton, conducted by the Rev. Glenwood Morgan. Assisted by the Rev. Ernie Morse. Burial in the Mt. Eagle Baptist Church Cemetery, Nellysford.

Active and honorary pallbearers were friends attending the service.

The body was at the church one hour before service.

There was no public viewing.

The family received friends at the residence of Sharon Harris, 182 Family Lane, Afton.

The family wishes to express their special thanks and appreciation to the many friends at Martha Jefferson Hospital, 6th Floor and in the ICU for their care of Elizabeth Ann Harris.

Services were entrusted to the Lewis Funeral Home, Waynesboro.

Alice Burgess Kidd

Alice Burgess Kidd, 92, of Lynchburg died on Friday, August 29, 2008 at Westminster-Canterbury Retirement Community.

Born in Comfort, W.Va., she was a graduate of Sherman High School and the Charleston School of Commerce.  She retired from her career as a tax consultant in 1996.

The daughter of the late John A. and Margaret Toney Burgess, she is survived by her husband of 68 years, Fred T. Kidd of Lynchburg; one son, Eugene Kidd and his wife, Mary of Lynchburg; daughter, Irene Wenger of Norfolk; daughter, Martha Sullivan and her husband, Michael, of Alexandria.  Also surviving her are six grandchildren: Andrea Kinnear and husband, Adam, of Norfolk; Eleanor Jones and her husband, Colston, of Norfolk; Martha Kidd of Charlottesville; Carolyn Kidd of Lynchburg; Thomas and Kathleen Sullivan of Alexandria. In addition she has four surviving great-grandchildren: Jacob, Stephen, Elsa, and Samuel Kinnear of Norfolk.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 6, at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, Lynchburg with the Rev. Marion Kanour and the Rev. Lloyd Lipscomb officiating.  Tharp Funeral Home may be contacted for the time of the service or visit the web site below.

Gladys Monroe

Gladys Monroe, of Shorty’s Place, died Aug. 24, at her residence.

Born June 6, 1923, in Nelson County, she was a daughter of the late Lewis and Cora Claytor.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thurman Monroe; a daughter, Sandra Arnette; two sons-in-law, John Arnette and Dana Mejia; a sister, Hazel Painter; and four brothers, Oliver, Grover, Roy and Lewis Claytor.

She is survived by a son, Dale Monroe and his wife, Shirley, of Stuart, Fla.; two daughters, Alice Holmes and her husband, Sam, of Waynesboro, and Marilyn Mejia of Stuarts Draft; one sister, Mae Keyser of Hixson, Tenn.; two special “sisters”, Alma Wilkins and Lorene Monroe; and two special grandchildren, J.D. and Mary Carroll, all of Fishersville.

She also leaves to cherish her memory seven grandchildren, J. D. Carroll, Matthew Monroe, Amy Wasson, Shannon Combs, Shayla Branch, Brian Holmes, Michael Holmes; and six great-grandchildren, Brandy, Megan, Dakota, Kyle, Makayla and Emily.

A funeral service was held Aug. 27, at Fishersville Baptist Church, with Pastor John Hamric officiating. Burial followed at Augusta Memorial Park.

Active pallbearers were Don Benson, David Cash, Denny Henderson, Buck Brown, Bob Rubin and Scott Hite.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the F.B.C. Sonshine Class and friends attending the service.

There was no formal visitation at the funeral home, friends and family were received at the residence.

Herbert Woodson

Herbert Woodson was called from labor unto reward on Aug. 27, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

Herbert was born Jan. 28, 1939, to the late Nathanial and Allease Woodson.

His siblings, Amos Woodson, Martha Dillard, Lillian King as well as daughters Karen Woodson and Denise Bartee all preceded him in death.

At an early age Herbert professed Christianity and was baptized into the body of Christ at St. Hebron Baptist Church, in Wingina. Herbert later became a Trustee of St. Hebron and was an active, devoted member of the church and community until his death.

Herbert was a fun loving spirit and a friend to all he encountered. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work and dedication to the things and people he loved. His years of hard work and service include being a service driver with S.L. Williams for many years. Later fulfilling a life goal, he established Herbert Woodson Trucking Co. Herbert will also be remembered as a witty, self made salesman of any and everything!!

Herbert married Shirley L. Allen on October 6, 1962 and from this union four children were born. Til his death, they remained faithful to their commitment to each other and family. He leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted family: his wife; son, Herbert, Sr. (Barbara) of Shipman; daughter, Linda of Charlottesville; seven grandchildren, Donell, Melissa, Herbie, Brian, Christopher, Devonta and Joshua; three great-grandchildren, Destiny, Devon and Nasir. Herbert is also survived by a brother, Henry (Pearl) Woodson of New York City, N.Y. and sister, Shirley Woodson of Hempstead, N.Y.; two brothers-in-law; five sisters-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A funeral service was held Aug. 30, at St. Hebron Baptist Church in Wingina with the Rev. Joseph Jones and the Rev. James Rose officiating.

Interment followed in the church cemetery.

The body lied in state at the church one hour prior to the time of service.

James Andrew Zimmerer

James Andrew Zimmerer, 61, of Crimora, died of pancreatic cancer on Aug. 25, at the residence of John and Aruella Zimmerer, in Petersburg, W.Va. Born in Staunton on May 10, 1947, he was the son of John and Maggie (Allen) Zimmerer. He was a retired Insurance Adjustor for Zimmerer & Associates. Mr. Zimmerer was a veteran of the United States Army; he was a member of the VFW #00452, and MADD.

His parents and a brother John A. Zimmerer precede him in death. He is survived by two sons James A. Zimmerer, stationed at Kanehoe Marine Corp Base, Kanehoe Bay, Hawaii, and Matthew L. Zimmerer of Crimora, two sisters Betty White Sulzbach of Concord, and Marion Johnson of Mesa, Ariz., one brother John L. Zimmerer of Petersburg, W.Va., and one grandson, Dylan Zimmerer.

A service was held Aug. 29 at Fellowship Pentecostal Church in Greenfield. Burial with a military service was in Fellowship Pentecostal Church Cemetery.

The family received friends at Basagic Funeral Home in Petersburg, W.Va., Aug. 29, and at Fellowship Pentecostal Church in Greenfield.

In lieu of flowers the family is requesting memorial to the James Zimmerer fund, P.O. Box 731, Petersburg, W.Va.
