In less than a week, in addition to electing a new president and U.S. senator, voters in Nelson County also will be be casting ballots for a members of the House of Representatives.

In the Fifth Congressional District, 12-year veteran Rep. Virgil Goode of Rocky Mount faces Democratic challenger Tom Perriello of Charlottesville.

For Perriello, this is his first try at elected office, and he’s shooting for the big leagues.

With the challenges this country faces today and in the future, on the economic and foreign policy fronts, we sincerely believe voters would be making an unwise decision to toss aside a capable, seasoned, experienced legislator such as Virgil Goode.

We strongly, and enthusiastically, endorse Goode for re-election.

Virgil Goode has been a fixture in Southside and Central Virginia politics for most of his life. Before being elected to Congress in 1996, he was a longtime state senator representing Franklin County and its environs in the General Assembly.

He has a well-deserved reputation for hard work that has made him invaluable to his constituents over the years; his level of constituent services sets the bar for any public servant. He also has a rock-solid reputation for fairness; when Republicans pulled even in numbers to the majority Democrats in the State Senate in the early 1990s, Goode (then a Democrat) forced his own party to share power with the GOP, a move that benefited all citizens of Virginia.

In Congress, representing the rural Fifth District, he’s hewed true to a traditional, Main Street conservatism of small but efficient government, low taxes and support for the American free enterprise system. He’s cast votes we strongly disagree with, such as his opposition to the financial sector stabilization last month; his rhetoric on the issue of immigration can be over the top at times. Still, he’s in the right camps: staunch for free enterprise and protection of the taxpayers and in support of legal immigration and protection of our national borders.

His opponent is a good person, with a history of service to his fellow man across the globe, from Africa to Afghanistan. He also is quite blunt on where he believes his own Democratic Party has strayed from common sense on a number of issues from foreign policy to domestic issues.

But the two candidates’ views of government and its role in the lives of everyday citizens is what we base our endorsement decision upon.

Goode, unlike his opponent, sees government as a necessary evil for the functioning of a well-ordered society, but his ultimate faith is in the individual. We detect more than a small degree of reliance on big government in his opponent’s platform regarding any number of issues: energy, education, competitiveness and health care to name just a few.

A member of the powerful Appropriations Committee, Goode believes instead in making the government we have to have work better for its citizens. He’s not there to add to the problem; and that’s a big reason we strongly support him for re-election.

With the challenges we face as a nation these days, experience and level-headedness is an asset in Washington. With Virgil, the Fifth District and its residents have those attributes in spades. Why throw them away for no reason whatsoever?

The Nelson County Times “strongly and enthusiastically” endorses Goode. What a shocker! Our little hometown paper is not exactly known for its intelligent, penetrating political insights. Its coverage of middle school sports can’t be beat, however.

Goode is a national laughing-stock completely out of step with the majority of the 5th district. He’s a racist homophobe, a multi-millionaire pretending to be a good ol’ boy, and a corrupt hypocrite beholden to energy, banking and other interests.

My favorite Goode quote: “Contrary to what some elites say, Americans are not addicted to oil – Americans are addicted to freedom!“

Time to go Virgil!

It is amazing to me that the Nelson Times can endorse Virgil Goode over Tom Perriello.  I cannot help but wonder if it is truly a sincere endorsement or merely a business decision based on the conservative views of the majority of those who subscribe to this newspaper.  Surely, if one looks at the records of both candidates, scrutinizing their abilities and accomplishments, one can see that Mr. Perriello is obviously far more qualified as his experience extends well beyond the neighborhoods of Southside Virginia.  One need only listen to the debates between these two candidates to understand their motives and qualifications.  While Goode focuses primarily on laying blame for current problems, Perriello offers intelligent, articulate, and innovative solutions which he would pursue as our congressman.  His plans to increase employment, pursue alternative energy sources, and his ability to work productively with people of varying political and cultural persuasions make him the person whom we should elect on Nov. 4th!

Do not vote for Goode just because you “have always voted for Goode.”  Make an informed decision by visiting Perriello’s website at http://www.perrielloforcongress.com/ and studying what he has to offer the people of the 5th district.  The time has come to retire Goode from his position and replace him with someone who represents the best for our future – Tom Perriello.

It is truly sad that the editorial staff of this newspaper endorses a bigot, racist, distorter of facts (in other words a liar).
When Virgil stated that Rep. Ellison was taking the oath on the Koran, that showed him to be a liar, a bigot, and a racist. Virgil knows full well that congress does not hold their hand on the Bible, the Koran or any other book.
They just raise their hand and swear to uphold the constitution and laws of the U.S.
They may have any thing or nothing in their other hand, but that does not constitute swearing on what is in their other hand.
There are far more issues where Virgil showed that he truly is all the things others accuse him of, and it is a sad state, of what this country has come too, when any newspaper endorses such actions that take us back in time, instead into the future.
It is embarassing to live in a County of such hypocrites.

Goode, Bush, and the Republicans have presided over a disastrous economy and war.  While this editorial praises Goode’s disdain for what he sees as the necessary “evil” of American government, such disdain for government and government regulation caused the current economic crisis.  Goode has proposed a radical tax plan that would hurt working families, and he has been rated as one of the least effective Congressman in the country, despite sitting on the Appropriations Committee.
By contrast, Tom Perriello would offer a fresh perspective and would change the country for the better.  He has promised to focus on creating jobs and improving the economy.  As a member of the controlling party, Perriello would be substantially more influential in Congress than Goode, and would more effectively represent the hard-working residents of Virginia’s Fifth District.
