Junior Sarah Buckley starts at the center position for the Gov basketball team. She is also an outside hitter on the varsity volleyball team and plays left field and short stop for the softball team. The Govs host Altavista on Jan. 25.

On the loss to Appomattox:

We didn't do so well on defense, I think was our major problem. And we only had seven players, which kind of hurt us. We're still trying to work things out. We're a young team. It's taking longer than I think anybody would like.

On areas for improvement:

Communication and teamwork, like just having chemistry with each other. And defense, especially boxing out.

On how she's stepped up:

I've tried to be positive about things even when it's hard to. During games, when we're running plays if there's an empty spot, even if it's not my position, I try to fill it in. I try to help the other players out. I try and do my best, no matter what the score is, and try to never give up on myself or the team.

I think I'm better on defense. I think I'm better at boxing out. I could improve at it. And making sure people don't get down.

On playing against bigger girls:

I try and get around them, and go into them when I go up because most likely I'll get a foul. I just try to play as hard as I can to beat them. Try to be faster than them.

On her choosing a favorite sport:

It's between volleyball and basketball. I've played softball my whole entire life, so I'm kind of worn out with it. I love volleyball. I love basketball. I have a lot of fun playing basketball. I feel like you can get a lot of anger out on the court. I'd rather win. I'd have more fun winning, but I still have fun playing.

On the best advice a coach has ever given her:

To keep trying even when you think it's a loss, just keep pushing yourself. And keep practicing. If there's something you can't do, just keep on trying, because you're going to get it. All my coaches end up saying that.

On how she spent the recent snow days:

Slept. I just slept.

On her favorite subject, Spanish:

It's a neat culture and language. I didn't sign up for the trip to go. Maybe one day, hopefully. I want to major in it, and (be a) teacher or translator.
