Senior guard T.J. Martin (5-foot-11, 135 pounds) starts for the Govs (17-1) and averages nine points and four rebounds per game. Martin is the team's best free throw shooter (83 percent) and has 20 steals this season. He was also a starting wide receiver and cornerback for the Gov football team.

On being one of four captains:

All of us have different leadership things. I'm the funny one. I like to play around. Thomas (Brown) and Chris (Jones) are the serious ones. Mike (Jones) likes to joke around.

On the court, say Chris Jones, he has a little temper, and when the referee calls a foul, I've got to go over there and calm him down. I joke with him about it, probably call him "hacker-shack" or something. And he'll start laughing and forget about it.

On having to sit out the second half of the Altavista game:

I felt really bad, because I was just sitting there, not being able to help. I felt helpless. I couldn't do anything to help us win. I had some kind of virus, but I don't know what it was.

On what the team learned from that first loss:

We have to go out and play hard every single minute of the game. We can't play good the first and second quarter, and then play bad the third and fourth quarter.

It showed us how it felt to lose. I'd rather lose during the season than during tournament playoffs.

On the toughest guy to defend:

Altavista's Trevor Hall. He's quick, and he has a very quick first step. It's hard to guard somebody that fast. (I'll) step up, try to chop my feet before I go out there, keep him from driving to the basket.

On the 71-42 Gretna win:

We were making a statement. That loss, it hurt, so we made a statement. We were going to blow them out, and try to keep winning from now on until we meet (Altavista) again. We weren't' going to let that loss bring us down.

On loving North Carolina, but not Tyler Hansbrough:

I started liking them a long time ago just because I like their colors. It just went on from there.

I don't know, I just don't (like Hansbrough). There's just something about him.

They (keep coming as) a team the whole game. If they've got you down, they're going to keep you down. Finish.

With 20 seconds left in a tied game-

I'd rather us have the ball, because it's very unlikely that we'd get a steal with 20 seconds and score. And we'd get that last shot. I'd take it. Outside.
