The Govs finally had all their players healthy for the tournament, but couldn't upset the third-seed, William Campbell, though they came close, losing 42-36 on Feb. 18.

It was one of the most complete performances of the season by the Govs, who held speedy guard Shamika Hubbard to nine points, most of which were scored on transition layups.

The Govs 3-2 zone left few openings for the Generals. Samantha Younger was dangerous from three-point range, scoring nine for William Campbell.

Offensively, Nelson was aggressive on the boards, scoring on put-backs. Jasmine Humbles led with 10 points, followed by Kaile Gannon with six. Jennifer Payne, Markita Martin and Sarah Buckley each scored five points.

Nelson led twice in the first half, but spent the second half playing catch-up. William Campbell turned Nelson turnovers into scoring opportunities to ultimately pull out the win. Nelson came within two points in the final minute when Gannon hit a shot down low, but then showed their inexperience in tight game situations.

"My only regret is that I probably should have called a time out after that last basket to set up something," Gov coach Lloyd Gray said. "I'm very pleased with our performance. This team is just now, at the end of our season, learning how to play together. So we're a little bit behind the curve."

With the new divisions in basketball, the Gov's loss doesn't disqualify them from the regional tournament. Schools are broken down like football, so there are now six state divisions. Nelson is in a division with William Campbell and Altavista.

Gray said his team has a very good chance of making the regional tournament, because many teams have a similar record (5-15).

"Us not getting blown out this game will help our cause, especially since the number one team in our region is probably William Campbell," Gray said.

The Govs will practice twice this week and will learn the evening of Feb. 24 if they are one of the eight teams to compete in the Region B tournament.
